CS2 Weekly Drop Explained: Reset Time, the Active Case Pool and What a Free Case Is Worth

The CS2 weekly drop is a free Care Package: once a week, a Prime account that ranks up its profile can pick rewards from a short list of weapon cases, weapon finishes and graffiti. Valve introduced it with Counter-Strike 2 on 27 September 2023, and it has never listed the cases in the pool or the exact moment the week resets.

This guide pulls together what Valve has actually said, what the community trackers report, and what the free items are worth in money on 10 October 2026. It is written for players who want to understand the system, not for anyone looking for an excuse to buy keys. A dropped case is worth cents; you do not have to open it to get value from it.

How the weekly drop works

Valve's CS2 launch notes put it in one line: it "replaced weekly drops with a weekly Care Package. Choose from weapon cases, weapon finishes, and graffiti." In practice you earn XP in official modes, your profile ranks up, and the Care Package becomes available to claim. Community guides describe being offered a handful of items and picking two; Valve has not documented the exact count, so check what your own client shows.

Six-step flow: buy Prime Status ($14.99 US), earn XP in official modes, rank up your profile, choose rewards from cases, weapon finishes and graffiti, receive the item if your inventory has room, then keep or sell it.

Valve has tuned the system several times since. On 31 March 2025 it added the Ascent, Boreal and Radiant collections to the Care Package drop list and removed Bank, Italy, Lake and the original Train. On 21 January 2026 it added Harlequin and Achroma and removed Safehouse, Dust 2, the 2018 Nuke and the 2018 Inferno collections. Those are weapon-finish collections, not cases, and they are the only drop-list changes Valve has itemised.

When the weekly drop resets

Valve does not state a reset time in its notes. What it does say is that the game shows it: a November 2023 update "added time to weekly rollover" to the profile tooltip, and another showed the remaining time in the redemption screen. Players commonly report the rollover at about 01:00 UTC on Wednesday, which is Tuesday evening in the US.

#3US PacificTue 18:00 PDTTue 17:00 PST
#4Central EuropeWed 03:00 CESTWed 02:00 CET

Two caveats. We could not confirm whether the rollover is pinned to UTC or follows US daylight time, so the right-hand column may be an hour off from November. And the countdown in your own client beats any table, ours included, because it is the one Valve actually runs.

Who qualifies: Prime, XP and levels

Prime Status is the gate. Valve's store page for the $14.99 Prime Status Upgrade (US price, read 10 October 2026) says Prime players are "eligible to receive Prime-exclusive souvenir items, item drops, and weapon cases". The same page says the upgrade is not eligible for a refund. A free account can play CS2 but should not expect the Care Package, so weigh the $14.99 against what the drops are worth, which the next sections price out.

XP is the other half. Since February 2024, players who earn all of their normal weekly XP, which Valve put at 11,166 XP, get an "XP Overload" status and reduced XP gain for the rest of the week. That cap is a useful signal: once you see it, further play that week is mostly for fun, not for drops. Trackers such as SteamDB.com describe the first rank-ups of the week as the ones that grant the package; Valve has not spelled out the rule.

The active drop pool, as read on 10 October 2026

This is the part every guide states with confidence and none can prove. Valve announces collections and terminals that join the Care Package, but it has never published a list of which weapon cases are in it. The two trackers we checked disagree, so here are both.

The terminals are the one area where Valve is explicit. It said the Genesis Uplink Terminal arrived "as a weekly drop" on 16 September 2025, and that Dead Hand Terminals, launched 11 March 2026 with 22 new gloves, are "available now as a possible weekly drop". Community trackers also reported in December 2025 that the old rare drop pool for retired cases had been emptied; Valve's notes for that week say nothing about it, so we treat it as unconfirmed.

What a free case is worth, and why you'd sell it rather than open it

Every container either tracker names had a Steam Market value between 8 cents and $1.40 on 10 October 2026. Those are the prices a buyer pays. Steam adds a 5% transaction fee and a 10% Counter-Strike 2 fee on top of what the seller receives, so the seller keeps roughly 87% of the listed price, and the proceeds stay in the Steam Wallet.

Bar chart, cheapest Steam Market listing per container, 10 Oct 2026: Dreams & Nightmares $1.40, Fever $0.86, Fracture $0.55, Dead Hand Terminal $0.49, Recoil $0.29, Revolution $0.21, Kilowatt $0.15, Genesis Terminal $0.08.

Opening the case is the expensive option. Each opening also needs a key, which players report at US$2.49 in the US client; Valve sells keys in-game, so we could not read the price on a public page. On that figure the key alone costs more than the most valuable free case is worth, and under the odds Valve disclosed for the Chinese version of the game in 2017, about four openings in five return a Mil-Spec skin. The knife-or-glove rate is 0.26%, roughly one opening in 385.

Selling the case, or simply keeping it, is the choice that does not cost you anything extra. A few weeks of drops add up to a dollar or two in Wallet funds, which is enough to buy a cheap skin outright instead of gambling for one. If you would rather turn drops into a specific skin, marketplaces such as SkinBaron and DMarket list cases and skins side by side with their float shown, so you know exactly what you get.

Can a knife come from a weekly drop?

Not directly. Valve's own description of the Care Package lists weapon cases, weapon finishes and graffiti, and no knife or glove appears in its drop-list notes. A knife or gloves can only follow from a dropped case if you then buy a key and open it, at the 0.26% rate, or from a Trade Up Contract, which since October 2025 turns five Covert skins into a knife or gloves from one of their collections.

Terminals work differently again. Valve says Dead Hand Collection items, including its 22 gloves, are purchased from Dead Hand Terminals; the terminal can drop for free, the items behind it cost money. For what any one item is worth, see knife and glove odds and CS2 case odds explained.

Edge cases

  • Full inventory. Valve's 10 June 2026 notes added an error message when you try to redeem Care Package rewards with a full inventory. Clear space or use a Storage Unit first.
  • Regional unsealing. On 17 September 2025 Valve noted that players in Belgium, the Netherlands and France could now unseal Sealed Genesis Terminal items, a reminder that container rules vary by country.
  • No Prime, no package. Prime is the stated gate for item drops and weapon cases.
  • Pool changes are silent. A case can leave the pool without a note, which is why trackers disagree.

Per-case detail for the three containers both trackers agree on is in our Kilowatt Case, Revolution Case and Dreams & Nightmares Case pages. For every case in one table, use the CS2 case catalogue; for cases that have stopped dropping and become scarce, see rarest CS2 cases.

Frequently asked questions

When do CS2 weekly drops reset?

Valve does not publish the time, but players report about 01:00 UTC on Wednesday, which is Tuesday evening in the US. The game shows the exact countdown in your profile tooltip.

How do you get free cases in CS2?

Have Prime Status, play official modes to earn XP, and rank up your profile. The weekly Care Package then lets you choose from weapon cases, weapon finishes and graffiti.

Do you need Prime for weekly drops?

Yes. Valve's Prime Status Upgrade ($14.99 in the US on 10 October 2026) is what makes an account eligible for item drops and weapon cases.

What cases are in the CS2 drop pool?

Valve does not say. On 10 October 2026 Skinbase listed Kilowatt, Revolution, Dreams & Nightmares and two terminals; SteamDB.com's July 2026 list adds Recoil, Fracture and Fever. Kilowatt, Revolution and Dreams & Nightmares appear on both.

Can you get a knife from the weekly drop?

No. The Care Package offers cases, weapon finishes and graffiti. A knife only comes from opening a case with a paid key, at 0.26%, or from a five-Covert trade-up.
